Public Summary

Using a national survey of OHNS residency programs, we queried resident concerns and roles during the initial stages and peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey results showed OHNS residency programs responded quickly with policy changes to minimize risks of viral transmission and exposure. In April 2020 a follow up survey showed that while spreading COVID-19 to others and PPE shortage were the leading concerns in the initial phases of the pandemic, education was at the forefront of resident concerns one month later. The residents redeployed to other services had higher concerns about their own burnout and worse in-hospital well-being. Ongoing work to evaluate issues across residencies at UCSF is underway.
